From the reel
One Indian bank makes about a quarter of HDFC Bank's profit, but is valued at about an eighth. The name is at the end.
HDFC Bank: profit up about 5%. Bad-loan ratio 1.11%. P/E 13.
IDBI Bank: profit fell 31%. But last year it had a ₹1,699 Cr one-off gain from selling NSDL shares. Without it, the bank says profit grew about 14%. The government has approved a buyer for 60.72% of the bank.
Punjab & Sind Bank: profit up 40%. Bad-loan ratio down from 2.92% to 2.09%. Its share price was near a one-year low on 22 Oct. P/E 10.
Bad loans fell at every bank we checked. South Indian Bank cut its ratio by more than half, from 2.93% to 1.24%.
And the mystery bank: Union Bank of India. Profit up 30%. Bad-loan ratio down from 3.29% to 2.42%. Its loans grew 18.5% in a year, while deposits grew 6.9%. P/E 6.6, against HDFC Bank's 13.
P/E = share price ÷ profit per share over the last 4 quarters (prices on 22 Oct). A higher P/E means investors are paying more for the same profit. Not investment advice.
