How the F&O ban period works

NSE F&O ban period rules: entry, exit and what is allowed.
StageRule
EntryCombined open interest across all derivatives contracts on the security crosses 95% of the market-wide position limit (MWPL).
During the banNo fresh positions in the security's futures or options. Only trades that reduce open interest are permitted.
ExitCombined open interest falls to 80% of MWPL or below. The security then leaves the list.

Rules can change

The thresholds and the way MWPL is measured are set by NSE and SEBI and have been revised before. Treat the figures above as NSE's rule at the time of writing and check NSE circulars for the current definition.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the F&O ban list?
The list of securities NSE has placed in the derivatives ban period. While a security is on it, no fresh positions can be created in its futures or options contracts; only trades that reduce existing open interest are allowed.
When does a stock enter the F&O ban period?
Under NSE's rules, a security enters the ban period when the combined open interest across all its derivatives contracts crosses 95% of the market-wide position limit (MWPL). NSE revises the limit methodology from time to time, so check its circulars for the current definition.
When does a stock leave the F&O ban list?
A security stays in the ban period until its combined open interest falls to 80% of the market-wide position limit or below, as per NSE's rules.
Which date does this list belong to?
The ban date shown at the top of the table, taken from the header of NSE's own ban-list file for the most recently published date in our data. The page refreshes every few minutes.
What does an empty list mean?
That no securities were on the latest published list, or that the figures are temporarily unavailable, in which case the page says so.
Is the F&O ban list a buy or sell signal?
No. It is NSE's disclosed list of securities in the ban period on a date, nothing more. DalalOS publishes raw disclosed data only, never verdicts, target prices or recommendations.
